Steering Column Assembly: Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten attaching shear bolts until heads break off.
To install, reverse removal procedure, noting the following: Using spacer tool (9208), make a .3" (8 mm) gap between steering gear and universal joint. If vehicle is equipped with long universal joint, gap will be smaller. Steering gear may need lowering to install long universal joint.
- Lubricate rubber bearing and slide bearing support on casing tube about .8" (20 mm). Install column switch on casing tube, loosely tighten bolts.
- Slide casing tube with bearing support and column switch on steering column. Install bearing support screws. Loosely tighten casing tube shear bolts.
- Drive spacer sleeve on steering column until sleeve is 1.67" (42.5 mm) from steering column face. Tighten column switch Allen bolt and bearing support mounting screws.
- Mount drive shaft on steering gear. Make sure shaft is free of tension. Reposition casing tube if needed. Check that play between steering wheel and column is .08-.16" (2-4 mm). Tighten shear bolts until heads break off.
