Installation Procedure

  1. If the vehicle has AWD, install the heat shield to the pump.
    2. Fig 1: Power Steering Pump Components

    NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  2. Install the rear bracket (4) and the bolt to the pump.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolt to 37 N.m (27.3 lb ft).

  3. Place the pump in the power steering pump front bracket.

    If the pump does not fit in the bracket, complete the following steps in order to increase the pump-to-bracket clearance:

    1. Move the pump to the side.
    2. Place a bar of steel on the pump side of a pump bracket bushing.
    3. Using a hammer, tap on the bar in order to move the bushing 2 mm (0.1 in).
    4. Place the bar on the pump side of the other pump bracket bushing.
    5. Using a hammer, tap on the bar in order to move the bushing 2 mm (0.1 in).
  4. Install the following components to the pump bracket:
    • The pump
    • The 2 bolts (5,6)
    • The 2 nuts (7,8)
  5. Tighten the nuts and the bolts.

    Tighten:  Tighten the nuts and the bolts to 37 N.m (27.3 lb ft).

  6. Verify the pump bracket bushings are against the pump housing.
    7. IMPORTANT: Verify the connectors are clean.
  7. Connect the PSP switch connector (3).
    8. NOTE: Refer to Installing Hoses without Twists or Bends Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  8. Install the outlet pipe fitting (1) to the pump.

    Tighten:  Tighten the fitting to 41 N.m (30.2 lb ft).

  9. Install the outlet pipe clamp bolt (2).

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolt to 7.8 N.m (69.04 lb in).

  10. Install the pump inlet hose (10) to the pump.
  11. Install the hose clamp (9) to the pump inlet hose.
  12. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical -1.8L (LV6) or to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical -1.8L (LNK).
  13. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
    15. NOTE: Refer to Using Proper Power Steering Fluid Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  15. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid .
    16. NOTE: Refer to Air in the Power Steering System Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  16. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering System .
  17. Inspect the power steering system for fluid leaks. Repair as necessary.
  18. Install the right front engine splash shield. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Engine - Right in Body Front End.
