Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure (LA1) in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Intake Duct Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  3. Remove the cruise control cable from the engine and reposition the cable away from the engine. Refer to Cruise Control Cable Replacement in Cruise Control.
  4. CAUTION: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.
    In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or install the engine. Do not pry or lean against the cruise control cable and do not kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable.
  5. Remove and discard the accelerator control cable from the engine and reposition the cable away from the engine. Refer to Accelerator Controls Cable Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  6. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Engine Cooling.
  7. Disconnect the radiator hoses from the engine. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement - Inlet (LA1) and Radiator Hose Replacement - Outlet (LA1) in Engine Cooling.
  8. Disconnect the heater hoses from the engine. Refer to Heater Hose Replacement - Inlet (LA1) and Heater Hose Replacement - Outlet (LA1) in HVAC Systems - Manual.
  9. Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Left  and Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Right .
  10. IMPORTANT: Relieve the fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  11. Disconnect the fuel lines at quick connects. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement - Engine Compartment in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  12. Remove the upper engine wiring harness from engine and transmission.
  13. Remove the vacuum hoses from the engine. Refer to Emission Hose Routing Diagram in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  14. Remove the vacuum brake booster hose.
  15. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  16. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  17. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  18. Remove the lower engine wiring harness from engine and transmission.
  19. Remove the three-way catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  20. Remove rear propshaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement in Driveline/Axle-Propeller Shaft. (AWD Only)
  21. Remove the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  22. Remove lower radiator baffle assembly.
  23. Remove the engine splash shields. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Engine in Body Front End.
  24. Remove the stabilizer shaft links from the lower control arms. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement in Front Suspension.
  25. Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement in Front Suspension.
  26. Remove the lower ball joints from the knuckles. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.
  27. Remove the transaxle cooler lines and bracket from the transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Hose Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  28. Remove A/C compressor bolts and position compressor aside.
  29. Disconnect the drive axles from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Front in Drive Axle.
  30. Secure the drive axles to the steering knuckle/struts.
  31. CAUTION: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control which could result in an accident and possible personal injury
  32. Remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.

  34. Lower the vehicle until the frame contacts the transaxle table.
  35. Remove the frame bolts. Refer to Frame Replacement - Front (W/AWD) or Frame Replacement - Front (W/FWD) in Frame and Underbody.
  36. Raise the vehicle in order to separate the powertrain/frame assembly from the vehicle.
  37. Remove starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (LA1) in Engine Electrical.
  38. Remove the engine flywheel to torque converter bolts.

  40. Install engine hoist to engine.
  41. Remove engine mount to frame nuts.
  42. Remove the engine-to-transaxle bolts (3, 4, 5, 6) and studs (1, 2).
  43. Separate and remove the engine from the transaxle/frame and install to the engine stand.
