Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the manual shift lever from the vehicle. Refer to MANUAL SELECTOR REPLACEMENT REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS .
  2. Remove the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) from the vehicle. Refer to SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM) in SIR.
  3. Disconnect the HO2S electrical sensor. Refer to ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION or ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in Engine Controls 1.8L (LV6).

  4. Remove the air cleaner assembly from the vehicle.
  5. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE in General Information.
  6. Remove the exhaust pipe from the vehicle. Refer to FRONT PIPE REPLACEMENT in Engine Exhaust.
  7. Remove the front heat shield from the vehicle.
  8. Remove the cable retaining clip, then disconnect the cable from the bracket.
  9. Remove the shift select cable from the cable support bracket.
  10. Remove the 2 nuts then separate the cable from the vehicle.

  11. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the shift select cable from the bracket.
  12. Disconnect the shift select cable from the transaxle.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Remove the shift select cable from the vehicle.
  15. Inspect the shift select cable for kinks, fraying, or excessive wear. Replace as necessary.
