Installation Procedure
- Install the shift select cable into the bulkhead from the passenger compartment side.
Install the select cable grommet retaining bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the retaining bolts to 5 N.m (43 lb in).
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE in General Information.
- Install the shift select cable into the bracket.
- Install the shift select cable bracket and the 2 retaining nuts.
Tighten
Tighten the retaining bolts to 12 N.m (9 lb ft).
- Connect the shift select cable to the cable support bracket.
- Install the shift cable into the transaxle bracket, then install the retaining clip.
- Connect the shift select cable to the transaxle, then secure the shift select cable with one lock washer and nut.
Tighten
Tighten the shift select cable nut to 12 N.m (106 lb in).
- Install the front heat shield on the vehicle.
Tighten
Tighten the heat shield bolts to 5 N.m (44 lb in).
- Install the front exhaust pipe assembly. Refer to FRONT PIPE REPLACEMENT in Engine Exhaust.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) in the vehicle. Refer to SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM) in RESTRAINTS.
- Install the manual shift lever in the vehicle. Refer to MANUAL SELECTOR REPLACEMENT REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS .
- Connect the HO2S electrical connector. Refer to ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION or Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) 2 Replacement (AWD) on page 6-973 in Engine Controls - 1.8L (LV6).
- Install the air cleaner assembly.
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY REPLACEMENT in Engine Electrical.
- With the ignition switch in the LOCK position and the manual selector in the Park position, attempt to manually push the vehicle. Vehicle should not move.
- Verify that the vehicle CANNOT be driven in the Neutral position
- Verify that the vehicle can be driven in D, 2, and L.
- Verify that reverse gear DOES operate in R.
