Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid
- Verify the vehicle is on a level surface.
- Inspect the fluid level in the reservoir.
- If the temperature of the fluid is below 75°C (167°F), verify the fluid is above the COLD MIN mark (5).NOTE: Do not hold the steering wheel in the full turn position longer than 5 seconds, as damage to the steering pump may result.
- With the engine idling at 1,000 RPM or less, turn the steering wheel from stop to stop several times in order to increase the temperature of the fluid to 80°C (176°F).
- Turn the engine OFF.
- Verify the fluid level is between the HOT MIN mark (4) and the HOT MAX mark (3).
NOTE: When adding fluid or making a complete fluid change, always use the proper power steering fluid. Failure to use the proper fluid will cause hose and seal damage and fluid leaks.
Important: Use new GM Goodwrench Automatic Transmission Fluid DEXRON ®-III, GM P/N 12378470 (Canadian P/N 10952622), or the equivalent fluid.
- Adjust the fluid level if necessary.
- When checking the fluid level after servicing the power steering system, bleed the air from the power steering system. Refer to BLEEDING THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM .
