Test A: Starter Solenoid Does Not Click

  1. Did you perform the Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check? If yes, go to step  2 . If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE ELECTRICAL  .
  2. Verify that the Clutch Pedal is pushed all the way in or that the transmission is in Park or Neutral. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the starter solenoid click? If yes, go to INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS  . If no, go to step  3 .
  3. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the Starter Relay Click? If yes, go to step  7 . If no, go to step  4 .
  4. Is the Theft Indicator blinking? If yes, go to THEFT DETERRENT DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK . If no, go to step  5 .
  5. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the Starter Relay. Connect a test lamp between the supply voltage circuit of the Starter relay coil and control circuit of the Starter relay. Verify that the Clutch Pedal is pushed all the way in or that the transmission is in Park or Neutral. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  17 . If no, go to step  6 .
  6. Connect a test lamp between the supply voltage circuit of the starter relay coil and ground. Verify that the Clutch Pedal is pushed all the way in or that the transmission is in Park or Neutral. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  15 . If no, go to step  9 .
  7. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the Starter Relay. Connect a test lamp between the supply voltage circuit of the starter relay switch and the supply voltage circuit of the starter solenoid. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  17 . If no, go to step  8 .
  8. Connect a test lamp between the supply voltage circuit of the starter relay switch and ground. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  16 . If no, go to step  24 .
  9. Is the vehicle equipped with a Manual Transmission? If yes, go to step  10 . If no, go to step  12 .
  10. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the Clutch Pedal Position (CCP) Switch. Connect a test lamp between the supply voltage circuit of the CPC switch and the starter relay coil supply voltage circuit of the CPC switch. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  18 . If no, go to step  11 .
  11. Connect a test lamp between the supply voltage circuit of the CPC and a good ground. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  25 . If no, go to step  14 .
  12. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch. Connect a test lamp between the supply voltage circuit of the PNP switch and the starter relay coil supply voltage circuit of the PNP switch. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  19 . If no, go to step  13 .
  13. Connect a test lamp between the supply voltage circuit of the PNP and a good ground. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  25 . If no, go to step  14 .
  14. Test the supply voltage circuit of the PNP switch for a high resistance or an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  32 . If no, go to step  21 .
  15. Test the control circuit of the Starter relay for a high resistance or an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  32 . If no, go to step  22 .
  16. Test the supply voltage circuit of the Starter solenoid for a high resistance or an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  32 . If no, go to step  23 .
  17. Inspect for poor connection at the Starter relay. Refer to INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS  . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  32 . If no, go to step  26 .
  18. Inspect for poor connection at the CPC switch. Refer to INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS  . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  32 . If no, go to step  27 .
  19. Inspect the PNP switch for proper adjustment. Refer to PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  32 . If no, go to step  20 .
  20. Inspect for poor connection at the PNP switch. Refer to INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS  . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  32 . If no, go to step  28 .
  21. Inspect for poor connection at the ignition switch. Refer to INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS  . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  32 . If no, go to step  29 .
  22. Inspect for poor connection at the BCM. Refer to INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS  . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  32 . If no, go to step  30 .
  23. Inspect for poor connection at starter solenoid. Refer to INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS  . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  32 . If no, go to step  31 .
  24. Repair the high resistance or open in the supply voltage circuit of the starter relay switch. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step  32 .
  25. Repair the high resistance or open in the supply voltage circuit of the starter relay coil. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step  32 .
  26. Replace the Starter relay. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step  32 .
  27. Replace the CPC switch. Refer to CLUTCH PEDAL POSITION SWITCH . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step  32 .
  28. Replace the PNP switch. Refer to PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step  32 .
  29. Replace the ignition switch. Refer to IGNITION SWITCH . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step  32 .
  30. Perform the set up procedure for the BCM. Refer to BODY CONTROL MODULE . Replace the BCM. Refer to BODY CONTROL MODULE . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step  32 .
  31. Replace the starter. Refer to STARTER MOTOR (3.8L)  or STARTER MOTOR (5.7L)  . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step  32 .
  32. Operate the system for which the symptom occurred. Did you correct the condition? If yes, system is OK. If no, go to step  2 .
