Park Lock Cable: Removal

  1. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
  2. Remove the left-side instrument panel insulator. See INSULATOR PANEL (LEFT SIDE)  . Remove the instrument panel driver knee bolster and deflector. See KNEE BOLSTER (LEFT SIDE)  .
  3. Remove the front floor console. See FLOOR CONSOLE  . Remove the left body hinge lower ("A" pillar) trim panel.
  4. Place the transmission in Park. Remove the steering column mounting bolts (2). See Figure . Remove the steering column mounting nuts (1). Lower the steering column.
  5. Reposition the floor carpet until the retaining clip on the tunnel is accessible. See Figure . Open the retaining clip (2) on the driver side of the tunnel and remove the park lock cable (1).
  6. Remove the park lock cable clip from the stud on the front of dash. See Figure .
    NOTE: Do not proceed to the next step with the ignition key in any other position than RUN (4).
  7. Release the park lock cable from the inhibitor attached to the steering column. See Figure .
  8. Insert a small flat-bladed screwdriver into the inhibitor slot. Depress the park lock cable latch. Gently pull the park lock cable from the inhibitor.
  9. Disconnect the park lock cable from the control lever pin. See Figure . Remove the park lock cable from the transmission control base. Remove the park lock cable from the vehicle. See Figure .
