The steering wheel is fastened to a steering shaft within the column. At the lower end of the column, the intermediate shaft connects the column to the steering gear. Some vehicle models are equipped with vehicle security. There are 3 security components the ignition switch assembly, steering column lock, and ignition cylinder. Components are mounted and designed into the steering column. Steering columns are designated as hazard switch, radio controls on some models, and tilt column with a floor shift. Multifunction switch lever, located on left side of steering column incorporates cruise control, headlight high beam dimmer, turn signal, and wiper/washer switches. For the drivers safety the energy-absorbing steering column compresses in the event of a front-end collision. Reducing the chance of an injury. The mounting capsules break away from the mounting bracket in the event of an accident.
