Diagnostic Procedures
- Perform powertrain diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Check A/C compressor for free rotation operation. Start engine. Place HVAC control module in OFF position. If A/C compressor is still engaged, diagnose A/C compressor clutch for not disengaging. See appropriate A/C-HEATER SYSTEM article in AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING. If A/C compressor clutch is disengaged, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, command the A/C clutch relay on and off. If A/C clutch relay turns on and off with each command, problem is intermittent. If A/C clutch relay does not turn on and off, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect A/C clutch relay (located in underhood fuse/relay block). Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using a test light connected to ground, probe A/C clutch relay terminal No. 1239 (power circuit). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 11.
- Connect test light between A/C clutch relay terminals No. 459 and 1239. Using scan tool, command A/C clutch relay on and off . If test light turns on and off with each command, go to step 9. If test light does not turn on and off, go to next step.
- If test light remains on with each command, go to step 8. If test light does not remain on with each command, go to next step.
- Check for short to voltage in Dark Green/White wire between PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 39 and underhood fuse/relay block terminal F7. See Figure. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 14. If circuit is okay, go to step 10.
- Check for short to ground in Dark Green/White wire between PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 39 and underhood fuse/relay block terminal F7. See Figure. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 14. If circuit is okay, go to step 10.
- Check for poor connections at A/C clutch relay. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 14. If connections are okay, go to step 12.
- Check for poor connections at PCM harness connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 14. If connections are okay, go to step 13.
- Repair ignition 1 voltage circuit of A/C clutch relay at fuse/relay block. After repairs, go to step 14.
- Replace A/C clutch relay. After replacing relay, go to step 14.
- Replace PCM. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within the conditions for running this DTC. See CODE ENABLE CRITERIA . If DTC resets, go to step 3. If no DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
