Test E: Lock System Does Not Unlock

  1. After reviewing ignition lock system description perform PRELIMINARY INSPECTION  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. After performing preliminary inspection, go to next step.
  2. If lock system does not operate normally, go to next step. If lock system operates normally, system is okay.
  3. Check for incorrect, worn or damaged keys. If all keys are okay, go to next step. If keys are not okay, go to step  8 .
  4. Check for faulty lock cylinders. If lock cylinders are not damaged, go to next step. If any lock cylinder is damaged, go to step  9 .
  5. Check automatic transmission shift lock control adjustment. See appropriate TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T article in AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE. If shift lock has proper adjustment, go to next step. If shift lock is not adjusted properly, go to step  10 .
  6. Check lock module for damage. If lock module is not damaged, go to next step. If lock module is damaged, go to step  11 .
  7. Check ignition switch assembly for damage. If ignition switch assembly is not damaged, go to step  3 . If ignition switch assembly is damaged, go to step  12 .
  8. Replace ignition key. Ensure key is same mechanical cut as original key. After repairs are made, go to step  13 .
  9. Replace ignition lock cylinder. See IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are made, go to step  13 .
  10. Adjust automatic transmission shift lock control. See appropriate TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T article in AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE. After repairs are made, go to step  13 .
  11. Replace steering column. See STEERING COLUMN  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are made, go to step  13 .
  12. Replace ignition switch. See IGNITION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are made, go to next step.
  13. Operate lock system to verify repairs. If lock system operates normally, testing is complete. If lock system does not operate normally, go to step  3 .
