Disabling System

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Pontiac Sunfire and 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Accidental air bag deployment is possible. Personal injury may result. Never begin work on or near SIR components until system is disabled. See DISABLING SYSTEM .
NOTE: When SIR fuse is removed and ignition switch is in RUN position, AIR BAG warning light will be on. This does not indicate a system malfunction.
  1. Turn steering wheel to place vehicle wheels in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch OFF and remove key.
  2. Remove access panel from end of driver-side instrument panel. Remove SIR fuse (15-amp) from driver-side instrument panel wiring harness junction block. See Fig 1. Remove Connector Position Assurance (CPA) clip and disconnect Yellow 2-pin connector for driver-side air bag module.
  3. Remove access panel from end of passenger-side instrument panel. Remove Connector Position Assurance (CPA) clip and disconnect Yellow 2-pin connector for passenger-side air bag module. See Fig 2. Wait at least one minute before working on air bag system.
