Battery Is Undercharged Or Overcharged

  1. Disconnect generator connector. Turn ignition on. Check voltage at harness connector terminal "L". If voltage exists, go to next step. If voltage does not exist, go to step  3 .
  2. Check voltage at generator BATT terminal. If voltage exists, go to step  4 . If voltage does not exist, go to step  5 .
  3. Check for poor contact or open circuit between PCM connector C2 terminal No. 61 (3.8L) or No. 15 (5.7L) and generator terminal "L" (Red wire). Repair as needed. If wiring is okay, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Recheck system.
  4. Reconnect generator connector. Start engine and run at fast idle. Turn off all accessories. Check voltage across battery terminals. If voltage is 13.5-15.5 volts, go to step  6 . If voltage is not 13.5-15.5 volts, go to step  7 .
  5. Repair open circuit between generator BATT terminal and battery positive terminal. Recheck system.
  6. Load test generator. Replace generator as needed. If generator is okay, perform parasitic load test. See PARASITIC LOAD TEST in GENERAL INFORMATION.
  7. Replace generator. Recheck system.
