Code 18 - Abs Enable Relay Coil Circuit Shorted To Battery: Notes

Ignition voltage is supplied through ABS enable relay. EBCM energizes pull-in coil by completing ground circuit at EBCM ABS relay control terminal. Magnetic field created will close ABS enable relay contacts to supply battery voltage to EBCM, providing power to motors and solenoids.

Code 18 can be set after EBCM commands ABS enable relay on. This test monitors availability of current/voltage to motors and solenoids. This malfunction does not allow voltage to be available to motors and solenoids. Code will be stored, ABS is disabled and ABS warning light illuminated.

NOTE: Test numbers refer to numbers on diagnostic chart. Use only 10-megohm (minimum) DVOM for all voltage and resistance tests.
  1. Determines if EBCM is capable of controlling ABS relay.
  2. Checks for short to voltage on ABS relay control circuit.
  3. Ensures short was not due to physical damage of ABS relay.
  4. Checks for internal short in ABS enable relay.
  5. Identifies whether malfunction is due to shorted connection in dash-to-engine connector.
