Steering Rack Assembly: Reassembly

  1. Clean parts in power steering fluid. Ensure threaded components are clear of dirt or foreign material. Coat all seals in power steering fluid. Install upper pinion bushing into valve bore in housing. Install pinion shaft seal and pinion bearing assembly in housing. Install lower pinion bearing circlip in housing. Ensure circlip is positioned correctly. See Figure .
  2. Assemble piston rod seal and piston rod guide assembly. Install rack seal, back-up washer and piston rod guide assembly on rack. Install and tighten piston shaft lock nut. Slide rack and piston rod guide assembly into valve housing. Install rack tube housing onto rack. Fit valve housing to rack tube using a small amount of Loctite.
  3. Install and center rack guide assembly in rack housing window. Install pinion and valve assembly in housing. Ensure reference marks are aligned and rack guide is centered in housing window. Hold pinion stub shaft and tighten lock nut. Install pinion shaft dust cap (lower) and upper pinion bearing and seals. Install upper pinion bearing assembly retaining clip. Install boot retaining bushings and boot.
  4. For ease of assembly and alignment, install inner tie rod bolt through center cover washer. Position and install boot clamps. Ensure bridge of boot clamp is installed over split in boot. Install hydraulic lines on cylinder tube and valve body. Install rack in vehicle. Fill and bleed hydraulic system. Road test and check for leakage.
