Steering Rack Assembly: Disassembly

  1. With rack removed from chassis, remove hydraulic lines and "O" rings. Remove right hand side mounting grommet and cut-off boot clamps. Remove boot retaining bushings and boot. Remove piston guide assembly. Remove thrust adjuster assembly from pinion housing. See Figure , Figure and Fig 1 .

  2. Remove dust cover and circlip from bottom of valve housing. Hold pinion shaft and remove lock nut from end of pinion shaft. Center rack in housing and mark position of pinion shaft in housing. Press on threaded end of pinion shaft until valve assembly can be removed from housing.
  3. Remove dust shield and bearing assembly from valve housing. Replace valve body "O" rings. Ensure rings are not damaged during assembly. Remove rack tube assembly from rack and pinion housing. Mark position of components for reassembly reference.
  4. Remove nut from end of rack assembly. Remove piston and seal assembly. Remove rack seals and back-up washers.
