Starter Relay Test

The starter relay is located in Power Distribution Center (PDC) in engine compartment. Remove starter relay from PDC to perform the following tests. Refer to illustration for terminal numbers and identification. See Fig 1 .

  1. A de-energized relay should have continuity between terminals No. 87A and 30, and no continuity between terminals No. 87 and 30. If okay, go to Step 2). If not okay, replace faulty relay. Resistance between terminals No. 85 and 86 (electromagnet) should be 75 +/- 5 ohms. If okay, go to Step 3). If not okay, replace faulty relay.
  2. Connect a battery B+ lead to terminals No. 86 and a ground lead to terminal No. 85 to energize relay. The relay should click. Also test for continuity between terminals No. 30 and 87, and no continuity between terminals No. 87A and 30. If continuity tests correct, starter relay is okay. If not, replace faulty relay.
