Instrument Cluster Illumination Concern
NOTE:
For connector terminal identification and wiring diagrams, see
BODY CONTROL COMPUTER - INTRODUCTION article. Perform VERIFICATION TEST VER-1A
after each repair.
CAUTION:
Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select ELECTRO/MECHANICAL cluster. If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE or CCD BUS FAILURE, go to appropriate VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS article. If scan tool does not display NO RESPONSE or CCD BUS FAILURE, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, read DTCs. If scan tool displays ROM TEST FAILURE, recalibrate all gauges. If scan tool displays RAM TEST FAILURE, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. If scan tool displays BODY COMPUTER ODOMETER FAILURE, replace BCM. If scan tool displays NO MESSAGE FROM BCM, PCM or TCM, go to appropriate VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS article. If scan tool does not display any of the listed messages, go to next step.
- Remove and inspect junction block fuse No. 2. See Figure . If fuse is open, go to step 5 . If fuse is okay, go to next step.
- Replace fuse. Turn park lights on and rotate dimmer wheel to full intensity. If fuse No. 2 blows, repair short to ground in orange wire between junction block and instrument cluster connector terminal No. 6. If fuse No. 2 is okay, system is currently functioning correctly.
- Turn park lights on. If park lights illuminate, go to next step. If park lights do not illuminate, go to EXTERIOR LIGHTING SYSTEM .
- Using scan tool, read park lamp switch status. If scan tool displays PARK LAMP ON, go to next step. If scan tool does not display PARK LAMP ON, go to step 19 .
- Using scan tool, read panel lamp sensor voltage. If scan tool displays zero volts, go to next step. If scan tool displays voltage, go to step 15 .
- While using scan tool to read panel light sensor voltage, rotate dimmer control switch between high and low. If voltage changes, go to step 15 . If voltage does not change, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, read panel lamp sensor voltage. Rotate dimmer switch between high and low. If voltage remains high, go to next step. If voltage does not remain high, go to step 12 .
- Ensure park lights are on. Rotate dimmer switch to high position. Access headlight switch connector. Do not disconnect connector. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, backprobe connector. Measure voltage on headlight switch 13-pin connector terminal No. 6 (Black wire). If voltage is one volt or less, go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt, repair open Black wire.
- Measure voltage on headlight switch 13-pin connector terminal No. 12 (Orange/Black wire). If voltage is .8 volt or less, repair open Orange/Black wire. If voltage is more than .8 volt, replace BCM.
- Access Body Control Module (BCM) connector "A". BCM is located with junction block under driver's side instrument panel. See Figure . Remove connector cover. Do not disconnect connector. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, backprobe connector "A". Measure voltage on BCM connector "A" terminal No. 8 (Orange/Black wire) while rotating dimmer switch. If voltage varies from zero to 4 volts, replace BCM. If voltage does not vary from zero volts to 4 volts, go to next step.
- Ensure park lights are still on. Disconnect headlight switch 13-pin connector. Using scan tool, read panel lamp sensor voltage. If voltage is more than 4 volts, replace headlight switch. If voltage is 4 volts or less, go to next step.
- Turn park lights off. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, measure resistance at headlight switch 13-pin connector terminal No. 12 (Orange/Black wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace BCM. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Orange/Black wire for short to ground.
- Ensure park lights are on and dimmer switch is at midway position. Locate junction block 36-pin connectors "A" (Red) and "C" (Black). See Figure
. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, measure voltage on each panel lamp driver terminal (Orange wire). See PANEL LAMP DRIVER TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION
table. While backprobing each terminal, rotate dimmer switch from low to high. If voltage increases from zero volts to about 12 volts at all terminals, go to next step. If voltage does not increase at any terminal, replace junction block.PANEL LAMP DRIVER TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION
Connector Terminal No. Connector "A" 1 & 8 Connector "C" 1, 8, 23 & 30 - Disconnect instrument cluster 13-pin connector and ensure connector is clean and not damaged. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, measure voltage at instrument cluster Blue 13-pin connector terminal No. 6 (Orange wire). If voltage is more than 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 5 volts or less, repair open Orange wire between instrument cluster and junction block.
- Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, measure resistance at instrument cluster 13-pin connector terminal No. 13 (Black wire). If resistance is 20 ohms or more, repair open Black wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, system is currently functioning correctly.
- If problem is only with instrument cluster illumination, replace instrument cluster circuit board. Recalibrate gauges using scan tool. If problem is with a specific light, inspect bulb. If bulb is okay, repair open in suspect indicator light driver and/or ground circuits.
- Ensure park lights are on. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, measure voltage on junction block fuse No. 2. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace junction block. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace Body Control Module (BCM). BCM is located with junction block under driver's side instrument panel. See Figure .
