Engine Temperature Warning Light Concerns

NOTE: For connector terminal identification and wiring diagrams, see BODY CONTROL COMPUTER - INTRODUCTION article. Perform VERIFICATION TEST VER-1A  after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector.
  1. Start engine. If engine temperature light is illuminated, go to next step. If engine temperature light is not illuminated, go to step  5 .
  2. Using scan tool, select BODY SYSTEMS. Read CHIME MONITOR. If ENGINE TEMPERATURE LIGHT is ON, see appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article. If engine temperature light is not illuminated, go to next step.
  3. Turn engine off. Turn ignition to ON position. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) connector "A". BCM is located with junction block under driver's side instrument panel. See Figure . If engine temperature light is not illuminated, replace BCM. If engine temperature light is illuminated, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect information center connector. Remove ignition key. Turn off all lights and accessories. Close all doors. Using external ohmmeter, measure resistance between ground and information center connector terminal No. 6 (Violet wire). If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace information center. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair Violet wire for short to ground.
  5. Turn engine off and leave ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate engine temperature light. If engine temperature light illuminates, warning light system is currently functioning correctly. If engine temperature light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  6. Disconnect information center connector. Using external voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and information center connector terminal No. 10 (Brown/Pink wire). If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open Brown/Pink wire between junction block and information center. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  7. Remove and inspect engine temperature warning light bulb. Replace as needed. If bulb is okay, go to next step.
  8. Reinstall bulb and reconnect information center connector. Backprobe information center connector with jumper wire. Connect jumper between ground and information center connector terminal No. 6 (Violet wire). If engine temperature warning light does not illuminate, replace information center. If engine temperature warning light illuminates, go to next step.
  9. Gain access to Body Control Module (BCM) connector "A". BCM is located with junction block under driver's side instrument panel. See Figure . Remove cover from connector "A". Connect jumper wire between ground and BCM connector "A" terminal No. 6 (Violet wire). If engine temperature warning light does not illuminate, repair open Violet wire. If engine temperature warning light illuminates, replace BCM.
