Test NTC-18: Checking Timing Belt Alignment

NOTE: A loose timing belt and/or improper replacement of timing belt may cause timing belt to jump one or more teeth which could result in severe engine damage. This test first verifies crank and cam positions and then updates the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
  1. Check engine valve timing. See appropriate article in ENGINES. If engine valve timing is okay, go to next step. If engine valve timing is incorrect, go to step  3.
  2. Relearn procedure must be performed for Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor and Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. Connect scan tool to DLC. Select ADJUSTMENTS and then CMP/CKP. The PCM will perform a CMP and CKP sensor relearn procedure automatically. Once relearn procedure is completed, perform TEST VER-2A .
  3. Repair engine as necessary to obtain correct engine valve timing.
