Instrument Cluster Test 3B - Speedometer Not Operating Properly
NOTE:
Perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TEST 1A before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification and wiring diagrams, see appropriate sections in this article. Perform VERIFICATION TEST VER-1A after each repair.
CAUTION:
Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
- If problem is only with odometer, replace odometer. If problem is with speedometer and odometer, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate gauges. If speedometer goes to more than 70 MPH in steps and then to zero, go to next step. If speedometer does not go to more than 70 MPH, replace gauge pack. Recalibrate gauges using scan tool.
- Using scan tool, read Powertrain Control Module (PCM) status. If scan tool displays, ACTIVE ON THE BUS, go to next step. If scan tool does not display ACTIVE ON THE BUS, go to appropriate SYMPTOM ID TEST 1A - IDENTIFYING VEHICLE EQUIPMENT & SYSTEM PROBLEMS.NOTE: For connector terminal identification and wiring diagrams, go to appropriate section in this article. When directed to go to next step, disregard step if vehicle is not equipped with module being tested.NOTE: Perform a visual inspection before proceeding with this test.
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is a 16-pin connector located on left side of steering column. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool display is not blank, go to next step. If scan tool display is blank, see appropriate VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS article.
- Using scan tool, read PCM DTCs. If a NO VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL message is not present, go to next step. If a NO VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL trouble code is present, see appropriate article:

- For Town & Country 3.8L see TESTS W/CODES - 3.8L .
- If TP sensor percent does increase, go to next step.
- Raise and properly support vehicle. Start engine. Place transaxle in Drive and slowly allow drive wheels to turn. Using scan tool, observe vehicle speed under MONITORS. If scan tool speed display matches speedometer speed, speedometer is currently operating properly. If scan tool speed display does not match speedometer, replace Body Control Module (BCM) "B" connector. BCM is located with junction block. See Figure in CHIME TEST 2A.
