Amperage Draw Test

NOTE: Ensure battery is fully charged and terminals are clean and tight. Perform battery voltage drop and load tests before proceeding.
  1. Using an inductive volt-ammeter type tester, connect induction ammeter clamp to negative battery cable. Connect positive voltmeter lead to positive battery post and negative voltmeter lead to negative battery post. Fully engage parking brake, and place transmission in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T).
  2. Ensure all vehicle accessories are off. On vehicles with direct ignition system, disconnect ignition coil electrical connector. On vehicles with conventional distributor, disconnect coil secondary cable from distributor and connect to ground. Crank engine using ignition switch, and note cranking voltage and cranking amperage.
  3. If voltage is greater than 9.6 volts and amperage is greater than specification, go to STARTER FEED CIRCUIT TEST. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS table. If voltage is at least 12.5 volts and amperage is 0-10 amps, go to STARTER CONTROL CIRCUIT TEST.
