No-Load Test

  1. Clamp starter's mounting flange in soft-jawed vise. Install ammeter and carbon pile rheostat in series with battery positive terminal and starter battery terminal.
  2. Connect voltmeter across starter motor. Rotate carbon pile to full resistance position. Connect cable from battery negative terminal starter frame. See Fig 1.
  3. Adjust rheostat until battery voltage shown on voltmeter is 11.5 volts. Ensure maximum amperage is within specification and starter motor turns smoothly and freely. Reading should be within specification. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS  table.
CAUTION: Overheating, caused by excessive starter operation, will damage starter. DO NOT  operate starter for more than 30 seconds at a time without allowing starter to cool for at least 2 minutes.
  4. Disconnect electrical connections. Repair or replace starter if not within specification.
