Steering Column: Disassembly
- Remove upper and lower steering column covers. Remove key lamp, ignition switch, dimmer switch and key buzzer switch. Remove wiper/washer switch. See STEERING WHEEL & COLUMN SWITCHES article in STEERING section. See list below. Remove wiring clip, turn signal switch retainer and turn signal switch.
- Unlock key cylinder. Shaft will turn 360 degrees. Remove upper snap ring. Slide steering shaft out through lower end of jacket. Remove "U" joint to service lower bearing. Remove turn signal switch to access upper bearing.
- Using a screwdriver, gently pry upper bearing from housing (if necessary). Remove inhibitor lever and spring retaining screw. Unhook ignition switch push rod from ignition switch.
- Housing is serviced as a integral unit. DO NOT
remove housing from jacket unless it is to be replaced. If necessary to remove housing from jacket, drive it off, or split housing with a hacksaw. If housing is removed, replace with a new one.
