Engine Running Test Mode

  1. The engine running test mode is used to read the output signal of specific sensors to the SMEC when the engine is running. This test can be performed with the engine idling in Neutral with parking brake applied, or during vehicle road test.
  2. Engine running codes are 2-digit codes. The DRB-II Tester (C-4805 ) MUST be used for this test. The "CHECK ENGINE" light does not function in this mode.
NOTE: If vehicle does not have a fully charged battery before entering Engine Running Test Mode, the DRB-II Tester will loose its memory when vehicle is started. If this happens you must enter all vehicle information again.
  3. Set tester to "ENGINE RUNNING TEST MODE". Start engine and press "READ/HOLD" key until "READ" is displayed. When O2 sensor reaches operating temperature, the tester will display O2 system switching from lean to rich by displaying "0" and "1" (0 is lean, 1 is rich).
  4. With engine running in Neutral or Park and O2 system switching displayed, the idle motor system can be checked by pressing the "READ/HOLD" key until "HOLD" is displayed. Engine speed should increase to about 1500 RPM.
  5. With engine running, O2 switching displayed and "READ" displayed, select Engine Running Test Modes by pressing the "F3" key. Enter test code. Press "READ/HOLD" key until "HOLD" is displayed. The SMEC will display the selected sensor or operate engine in a specific mode for diagnosis.
  6. To return to O2 switching, press "READ/HOLD" key until "READ" is displayed. Press and hold "ATM" key until "0" or "1" is displayed.
  7. Battery voltage, manifold vacuum and vehicle speed are actual readings and no correction is required. Coolant sensor and engine RPM readings are to be multiplied by 10 for actual readings. All other readings are to be divided by 10 for actual reading.
NOTE: If using diagnostic equipment other than DRB-II Tester (C-4805 ), follow manufacturer's instructions on how to connect diagnostic read-out box and obtain codes. Some diagnostic read-out boxes will display information that is not contained in this testing. This information may not be relative to diagnosing a problem. Only information contained in this article should be used during diagnosis.
