Heated Oxygen (O2) Sensor

The oxygen sensor is mounted in the rear exhaust manifold. The sensor monitors oxygen content of exhaust gases. The oxygen content reacts with the sensor to produce a voltage output signal that is sent to the SMEC.

The O2 sensor is electrically heated for faster warm-up and also enables the vehicle to remain in "closed loop" during extended idle periods. If oxygen content of exhaust gases is low (rich mixture), the O2 sensor will produce a high voltage. If oxygen content of exhaust gases is high (lean mixture), the sensor will produce a low voltage. The SMEC can constantly adjust injector pulse width to obtain optimum air/fuel ratio under varying engine loads.
