No Start Test No 7 - Ignition Primary Control Circuit
- If codes 88-12-55 were displayed from NO START TEST NO 6 , leave tester connected. Connect an analog voltmeter between negative terminal of ignition coil and ground. Enter ATM Test "01". See ENTERING ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS in this article. If voltmeter reading is pulsating between 10-14 volts, replace ignition coil. If voltmeter is not pulsating and reads battery voltage, go to next step. If voltmeter is pulsating between 5-10 volts, replace ignition coil. If voltmeter is pulsating between 0-2 volts, go to step 3).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 14-pin connector from SMEC. Connect an ohmmeter between negative terminal of ignition coil and cavity No. 12 of 14-pin connector. If ohmmeter is reading continuity, replace SMEC for a bad power board. If ohmmeter is not reading continuity, repair Black/Yellow wire of cavity No. 12 for an open circuit.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect wire from negative side of ignition coil. Connect voltmeter to negative terminal of ignition coil and ground. Enter ATM Test Mode "01" on tester. If voltmeter reading is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltmeter reading is between 0-2 volts, replace ignition coil.
- Leave wire from negative ignition coil terminal disconnected. Turn ignition off. Disconnect 14-pin connector from SMEC. Connect an ohmmeter between cavity No. 12 of connector and ground. If ohmmeter is not reading continuity, replace SMEC for a defective power board. If ohmmeter is reading continuity, repair Black/Yellow wire of cavity No. 12 for a short to ground.
