Ch1 - Checking Charging System For Fault Codes

  1. Connect DRB II to diagnostic connector. Enter Diagnostic Test Mode. Record all codes. If fault code 47 is stored, check for a loose fan belt. Check battery and alternator output.
  2. Turn ignition off. Erase fault codes. See ERASING CODES FROM SMEC MEMORY in this article. Start engine and let idle for 7 minutes. Raise engine speed to 1500 RPM for 30 seconds. Stop engine. Enter Diagnostic Test Mode. Refer to ENTERING ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS  in this article. Record all codes.
  3. If code(s) were not stored after memory was cleared, problem no longer exists. Go to step 6). If same code(s) were stored before and after memory was cleared, problem still exists.
  4. If code 88-12-55 is stored, proceed to CH2  . If code 88-12-16-55 is stored, proceed to CH3  . If codes 88-12-41-46-55 or 88-12-46-55 are stored, go to CH4  .
  5. If codes 88-12-41-55, 88-12-41-47-55 or 88-12-47-55 are stored, proceed to CH5  . If there is no code 88, ensure diagnostic readout box is operating properly and that there is not an open circuit between SMEC and DRB II diagnostic connector.

  6. Connect DRB II as in previous steps. If code 16 or 41 appeared before fault codes were erased in step 2), fault is intermittent. Enter ATM Test Mode "09" for code 41 or ATM Test Mode "07" for code 16. Connect voltmeter to the field control wire of alternator. Wiggle wires and connectors in charging circuit while observing voltage pulsations on voltmeter. When voltage pulsates while a circuit is being wiggled, this indicates an intermittent fault. Repair wire and/or connector. Retest circuits.
