NS16, Code 54 - Checking Distributor Sync Pick-Up
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Gray distributor sync pick-up connector. Turn ignition switch to "RUN" position. Connect negative lead of digital voltmeter to cavity No. 3 of sync pick-up harness connector. Connect positive lead of digital voltmeter to cavity No. 1 and then cavity No. 2 of harness connector.
- If voltmeter reading is at least 7 volts at both terminals. Replace distributor sync pick-up. Before replacing pick-up, ensure terminals in harness connector are not damaged causing a poor connection. If voltmeter reading is zero volts at connector cavity No. 1, repair Orange wire for an open circuit to wiring harness splice.
- If voltmeter reading is zero volts at cavities No. 1 and No. 2, repair Black/Light Blue wire in cavity No. 3 for an open circuit to wiring harness splice. If voltmeter reading is zero volts at connector cavity No. 2, turn ignition off. Disconnect 60-pin connector from SMEC. Connect ohmmeter to Tan/Yellow wire in 60-pin connector cavity No. 26 and to Tan/Yellow wire in sync pick-up connector cavity No. 3.
- If there is continuity, replace SMEC for a defective logic board. Before replacing SMEC, ensure terminal in connector cavity No. 26 is not damaged causing a poor connection. If there is no continuity, repair Tan/Yellow wire to 60-pin connector cavity No. 26 for an open circuit to distributor sync pick-up.
