Steering Column: Overhaul: Disassembly: Notes

On all models, remove trim shrouds and covers. Remove all column mounted switches and lock cylinder mechanism. Proceed to the STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.

  1. Unlock key cylinder. Shaft will turn 360 degrees. Carefully remove upper snap ring and slide steering shaft out through lower end of jacket.
  2. Lower bearing and spring can be serviced by removing universal joint. Upper bearing can be serviced by removing turn signal switch and gently prying bearing from housing using a flat screwdriver. Inhibitor lever and spring are held in place by one screw. Ignition switch push rod can be unhooked from ignition switch.
  3. Housing is serviced as an integral unit and should not be removed from jacket unless it is to be replaced. It can be removed from jacket by driving it off, or by splitting housing with a hacksaw. If removed, a new housing will be required.
  4. To remove lower shaft, pull back carpet. Remove 2 silencer retaining nuts. Remove silencer. Remove 4 toe plate mounting screws. Slide toe plate and seal off shaft. Remove roll pin at gear box. Remove lower shaft.
