Steering Gear - Power: Description
Chrysler Corp. FWD models use either Saginaw or TRW rack and pinion steering. The power-assisted rack and pinion steering gear assembly is mounted to the front crossmember, behind left axle. See Figure .
A rotary valve in the pinion assembly directs fluid to either side of the integral rack piston. Tie rods move steering knuckles and wheels while accommodating suspension movement. If drive belt or pump breaks, pinion drive-tangs, loosely mated to stub shaft, will provide manual steering control. Steering effort will increase. See Figure and Figure .
