Test 12 - Checking Choke System

  1. Remove air cleaner and start engine. Check position of choke. Choke should be fully open. If choke position is okay, go to step 3). If choke position is not okay, go to step 2).
  2. Check voltage supply to choke control. With engine running, connect voltmeter to choke feed wire and ground. Voltmeter should read within one volt of battery voltage. If voltage is okay, check for binding linkage, If okay, replace choke thermostat housing. If voltage is not okay, go to step 3).
  3. Check voltage supply to oil pressure switch. Turn off engine. Disconnect oil pressure switch connector. Connect voltmeter to terminal C of oil pressure switch connector and ground. Turn ignition switch to "Run" position. Voltage should be within one volt of battery voltage. If voltage is okay, go to step 4). If voltage is not okay, repair open circuit in harness to ignition switch.

  4. Check wire to choke control. Oil pressure switch connector disconnected. Connect ohmmeter between terminal A of oil pressure switch connector and choke connector. Ohmmeter should show continuity of 0 resistance. If there's continuity, replace oil pressure switch. If there's no continuity, repair open circuit in harness.
