Test B: Power Mode Mismatch

NOTE: Leave driver's door open during this test to disable retained accessory power system.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Using scan tool, select DIAGNOSTIC CIRCUIT CHECK. Turn ignition switch to OFF (LOCK) position while observing CLASS 2 POWER MODE parameter. If ignition switch parameter reading matches actual ignition switch position, go to next step. If ignition switch parameter reading does not match actual ignition switch position, go to step  6 .
  2. Turn ignition switch to ACC (UNLOCK) position while observing CLASS 2 POWER MODE parameter. If ignition switch parameter reading matches actual ignition switch position, go to next step. If ignition switch parameter reading does not match actual ignition switch position, go to step  6 .
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON (RUN) position while observing CLASS 2 POWER MODE parameter. If ignition switch parameter reading matches actual ignition switch position, go to next step. If ignition switch parameter reading does not match actual ignition switch position, go to step  6 .
  4. CAUTION: Engine may start during this step. Turn engine off as soon as crank power mode is observed.
  5. Turn ignition switch to START (CRANK) position while observing CLASS 2 POWER MODE parameter. If ignition switch parameter reading matches actual ignition switch position, go to next step. If ignition switch parameter reading does not match actual ignition switch position, go to step  6
  6. Turn ignition switch to ACC (UNLOCK) position while observing CLASS 2 POWER MODE parameter. If ignition switch parameter reading matches actual ignition switch position, go to DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  . If ignition switch parameter reading does not match actual ignition switch position, go to next step.
  7. CAUTION: Engine may start during this step. Turn engine off as soon as crank power mode is observed.
  8. Turn ignition switch to OFF (LOCK) position. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) harness connectors. BCM is located behind left side of instrument panel, to left of steering column. See Figure . Hold ignition switch in position that indicated incorrect power mode. Connect a test light between ground and each specified BCM harness connector terminal. See BODY CONTROL MODULE POWER MODE IDENTIFICATION  table. See Figure . If test light illuminates only at terminal specified for ignition switch position, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate only at terminal specified for ignition switch position, go to step  8 .
BODY CONTROL MODULE POWER MODE IDENTIFICATION

BCM Harness Connector (Color) Terminal Wire Color Input (Ignition Switch Position)
    C1 10-Pin (Blue) "J" Pink Ignition 1 Voltage (RUN & START)
C3 24-Pin (Blue) B9 Purple Crank Voltage (START)
B10 Purple Ignition 0 Voltage (ACC, RUN & START)
  9. CAUTION: Engine may start during this step. Turn engine off as soon as crank power mode is observed.
  10. Hold ignition switch in position that indicated incorrect power mode. Connect a test light between ground and each specified BCM harness connector terminal. See BODY CONTROL MODULE POWER MODE IDENTIFICATION  table. If test light DOES NOT illuminate at any terminal specified for ignition switch position, go to step  9 . If test light illuminates at all terminals specified for ignition switch position, go to step  11 .
  11. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ignition switch harness connector. Test each ignition switch input circuit between BCM harness connector and corresponding wire color terminal at ignition switch harness connector for short to voltage and/or short to each other. See BODY CONTROL MODULE POWER MODE IDENTIFICATION  . If short to voltage or short to each other is not found, go to step  10 . If short to voltage or short to each other is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  14 .
  12. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ignition switch harness connector. Test each ignition switch input circuit between BCM harness connector and corresponding wire color terminal at ignition switch harness connector for an open. See BODY CONTROL MODULE POWER MODE IDENTIFICATION  . If open is not found, go to next step. If an open is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  14 .
  13. Check for poor connections at ignition switch harness connector. If poor connections are not found, go to step  12 . If poor connections are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  14 .
  14. Check for poor connections at BCM harness connectors. If poor connections are not found, go to step  13 . If poor connections are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  14 .
  15. Replace ignition switch. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article. After repair, go to step  14 .
  16. Replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  17. CAUTION: Engine may start during this step. Turn engine off as soon as crank power mode is observed.
  18. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Reconnect any disconnected components and harness connectors. Using scan tool, select DIAGNOSTIC CIRCUIT CHECK. Observe CLASS 2 POWER MODE parameter while cycling ignition switch through all ignitions switch positions. If ignition switch parameter reading matches actual ignition switch position, system is okay. If ignition switch parameter reading does not match actual ignition switch position, return to step  1 .
