Test A: Cruise Control Inoperative/Malfunctioning
NOTE:
To avoid misdiagnosis, ensure preliminary inspection and all checks have been performed. See TROUBLE SHOOTING
.
- Perform CRUISE CONTROL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM then go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect cruise control module harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "F" (Brown wire). See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 39 .
- Using test light connected to cruise control harness connector terminal "E" (Black wire), probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "F" (Brown wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 40 .
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Turn cruise control main switch to OFF position. Using test light connected to ground, individually probe cruise control module harness connector terminals "A" (Gray wire), "B" (Dark Blue wire) and "C" (Gray/Black wire). If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates at any connection, go to step 17 .
- Turn ignition and cruise control main switches to ON position. Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "A" (Gray wire). See Figure . If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 18 .
- Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "B" (Dark Blue wire). Press and hold SET/COAST switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 20 .
- Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "C" (Gray/Black wire). Press and hold RESUME/ACCEL switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 21 .
- Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "D" (Brown wire). See Figure . If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, leave test light connected and go to step 10 .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect cruise control release switch and brakelight switch harness connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control release switch harness connector terminal "B" (Light Green wire). If test light illuminates, go to step 31 . If test light does not illuminate, go to step 24 .
- Press brake pedal while monitoring test light. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step 23 .
- Using test light connected to ground, probe brakelight switch harness connector C1 terminal "B" (White wire). If test light does not illuminate, leave test light connected and go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step 25 .
- Press brake pedal while monitoring test light. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 26 .
- Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "H" (Dark Green wire). If test light does not illuminate, leave test light connected and go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step 27 .
- Using scan tool, command CRUISE DISABLE ON. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 28 .
- Using a DVOM connected to ground, check voltage at cruise control module harness connector terminal "J" (Light Blue/Black wire). See Figure . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 29 .
- Road test vehicle and check speedometer operation. If speedometer operates normally, go to next step. If speedometer does not operate normally, go to appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article.
- Check wire that illuminated test light for short to voltage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If condition still exists, go to step 36 .
- Check Gray wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "A" and cruise control main switch harness connector terminal "A" for open, high resistance or short to ground. See Figure . Repair Gray wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If wire is okay, go to next step.
- Check Yellow wire between cruise control main switch harness connector terminal "D" and RADIO CRUISE fuse (2-amp) located in instrument panel fuse block for open, high resistance or short to ground. Repair Yellow wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If wire is okay, go to step 36 .
- Check Dark Blue wire between cruise control harness connector terminal "B" and cruise control functional switches harness connector terminal "B " for open, high resistance or short to ground. Repair Dark Blue wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If wire is okay, go to step 36 .
- Check Gray/Black wire between cruise control harness connector terminal "C" and cruise control functional switches harness connector terminal "C" for open, high resistance or short to ground. Repair Gray/Black wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If wire is okay, go to step 36 .
- Check Brown wire between cruise control release switch harness connector terminal "A" and cruise control module harness connector terminal "D" for open, high resistance or short to ground. Repair Brown wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If wire is okay, go to step 31 .
- Check Brown wire between cruise control release switch harness connector terminal "A" and cruise control module harness connector terminal "D" for short to voltage. Repair Brown wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If wire is okay, go to step 31 .
- Check Light Green wire between cruise control release switch harness connector and cruise control functional switch harness connector terminal "D" for open, high resistance or short to ground. Repair Light Green wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If wire is okay, go to step 36 .
- Check White wire between brakelight switch harness connector and cruise control module harness connector terminal "G" for short to voltage. Repair White wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If wire is okay, go to step 32 .
- Check White wire between brakelight switch harness connector and cruise control module harness connector terminal "G" for open, high resistance or short to ground. See Figure . Repair White wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If wire is okay, go to step 32 .
- Check Dark Green wire between cruise control harness connector terminal "H" and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 72 for short to ground. Repair Dark Green wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If wire is okay, go to step 35 .
- Check Dark Green wire between cruise control harness connector terminal "H" and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 72 for open, high resistance or short to voltage. Repair Dark Green wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If wire is okay, go to step 35 .
- Check Light Blue/Black wire between cruise control harness connector terminal "J" and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 59 for open or high resistance. Repair Light Blue/Black wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If wire is okay, go to step 35 .
- Check Dark Green/White wire between cruise control harness connector terminal "K" and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 55 for open or high resistance. Repair Dark Green/White wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If wire is okay, go to step 35 .
- Check cruise control release switch for proper adjustment. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE SWITCH & BRAKELIGHT SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS. Adjust switch if necessary. If adjustment is okay, go to step 33 .
- Check brakelight switch for proper adjustment. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE SWITCH & BRAKELIGHT SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS. Adjust switch if necessary. If adjustment is okay, go to step 34 .
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at cruise control release switch harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If connections are okay, go to step 41 .
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at brakelight switch harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If connections are okay, go to step 42 .
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at PCM harness connector. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If connections are okay, go to step 43 .
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at cruise control main switch and cruise control functional switch harness connectors. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If connections are okay, go to step 44 .
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at cruise control module harness connector. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 . If connections are okay, go to step 45 .
- Repair Brown wire between cruise control release switch harness connector and cruise control module harness connector terminal "D" as necessary. After repair, go to step 46 .
- Repair Brown wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "F" and CRUISE fuse (10-amp) in instrument panel fuse block. After repair, go to step 46 .
- Repair Black wire between body ground and cruise control module harness connector terminal "E" as necessary. See Figure . After repair, go to step 46 .
- Replace cruise control release switch. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE SWITCH & BRAKELIGHT SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step 46 .
- Replace brakelight switch. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE SWITCH & BRAKELIGHT SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step 46 .
- Replace and program PCM. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After repair, go to step 46 .
- Replace cruise control main switch and/or cruise control functional switches. See CRUISE CONTROL MAIN SWITCH and/or CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTIONAL SWITCHES under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step 46 .
- Replace cruise control module. See CRUISE CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & REPAIR. After repair, go to next step.
- Road test vehicle and operate all cruise control system functions to verify repair. If cruise control system operates normally, repairs are complete. If cruise control system still malfunctions or is inoperative, return to step 2 .
