Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check

  1. Perform battery test and inspection. See BATTERY TESTING & INSPECTION under ON-VEHICLE TESTING in appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If battery passed test, go to next step. If battery did not pass test, replace battery.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, repair as necessary. See TEST G: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, attempt communication with Body Control Module (BCM), Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). If scan tool communicates with all modules, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with any module, repair communications concern. See TEST F: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTCs function for each module. Record all DTCs displayed, DTC status and module which set the DTC. If scan tool displayed any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, repair starting or charging system by symptom. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS or STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  5. If scan tool displays DTCs which begin with "U", repair communications concern. See TEST F: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.If scan tool does not display DTCs which begin with "U", go to next step.
  6. If scan tool displays DTCs B1000 or B1013, repair these DTCs first. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If scan tool does not display DTCs B1000 or B1013, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
