Defogger System Diagnostic System Check
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST G: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Try to establish scan tool communication with HVAC module. If communication with HVAC module is established, go to next step. If communication with HVAC module is not established, go to TEST F: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Using scan tool, select CLASS 2 POWER MODE in DIAGNOSTIC CIRCUIT CHECK. Rotate ignition switch through all positions while observing IGNITION SWITCH POWER MODE parameter. If ignition switch parameter reading matches actual ignition switch position for all switch positions, go to next step. If ignition switch parameter reading does not match actual ignition switch position for all switch positions, go to TEST B: POWER MODE MISMATCH under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Select DISPLAY DTC function for HVAC module. Record all displayed DTCs and status of displayed DTCs. If any DTCs are displayed, go to next step. If no DTCs are displayed, attempt to diagnose defogger system by symptom. See appropriate A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING.
- If scan tool does not display any DTCs that begin with "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs that begin with "U", go to TEST F: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS.
- If scan tool displays DTCs B1000, B1004, B1007, or B1009, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If scan tool does not display DTCs B1000, B1004, B1007, or B1009, attempt to diagnose defogger system by symptom. See appropriate A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING.
NOTE:
Heater-A/C control module may also be referred to as heater-A/C control unit or HVAC module.
CAUTION:
Engine may start during this step. Turn engine off as soon as crank power mode is observed.
