Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
NOTE: DO NOT proceed with test if start-up coolant temperature is 70°F (21°C) or greater, or if engine cannot be cooled down. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  2. Allow engine to cool down completely. Start and operate engine at idle. Using scan tool, monitor ECT. If ECT increases to greater than 70°F (21°C), see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If ECT does not increase to greater than 70°F (21°C), go to next step.
  3. Check if DTC P0117, P0118, P0480 or P0481 is set. If any of this DTC is set, diagnose affected DTC(s) first. If DTC P0117, P0118, P0480 or P0481 is not set, go to next step.
  4. Allow ECT to cool down to less than 70°F (21°C). Turn ignition on, with engine off. Observe cooling fan operation. If cooling fans are off, go to next step. If cooling fans are on, diagnose electric cooling fan. See appropriate ELECTRIC COOLING FANS article in ENGINE COOLING.
  5. Check coolant level. If coolant level is okay, go to next step. If coolant level is not okay, go to step  9.
  6. Check thermostat for proper operation. If thermostat is operating correctly, go to next step. If thermostat is not operating correctly, go to step  9.
  7. Compare ECT displayed on scan tool to actual coolant temperature with a thermometer. If coolant temperature reading is within 5°F (3°C), go to step  9. If coolant temperature is not within 5°F (3°C), go to next step.
  8. Check for high resistance in ECT sensor circuit. Check for poor connections at ECT sensor and PCM. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  10. If circuit and connectors are okay, go to step  11.
  9. Diagnose engine cooling system. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  12. See appropriate ENGINE COOLING article.
  10. Replace faulty wiring or terminals. After repairs, go to step  12.
  11. Replace ECT sensor. After replacing sensor, go to next step.
  12. Allow engine to cool down completely. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Start and operate engine at idle. Using scan tool, monitor ECT. If ECT increase to greater than 70°F (21°C) within 2 minutes, go to next step. If ECT does not increase to greater than 70°F (21°C) within 2 minutes, go to  2.
  13. Using scan tool, review CAPTURED INFO. If any other DTCs are set, diagnose DTCs as necessary. If no other DTCs are set, system is okay.
