Diagnostic System Check

  1. Ensure all components are connected. Turn ignition switch to RUN position (engine off). Connect scan tool. Attempt communication with Body Control Module (BCM). If scan tool communicates with BCM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with BCM, diagnose no communication problem. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool in BODY FUNCTION mode, read BCM DTCs. Follow scan tool manufacturer's instructions. If any current DTCs are set, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table. If no DTCs are set go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Remove scan tool from DLC. Turn ignition switch to RUN position (engine off). If SECURITY indicator light turns on then off, go to step  5. If SECURITY indicator light does not turn on then off, go to next step.
  4. If SECURITY indicator light does not stay on or flash, go to next step. If SECURITY indicator light stays on or flashes, see PRELIMINARY INSPECTION  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  5. Using scan tool, check for history DTCs. If there are any history DTCs, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table. If no history DTCs are set, diagnose by symptom. See SYMPTOM TESTS .
