Diagnostic Aids
- The diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are stored in the EBCM for the MSVA if a malfunction occurs. No warning lamp will come on during the malfunction. When a malfunction occurs, the DTC(s) can be retrieved using a scan tool. A difference in power steering effort may be felt if a MSVA DTC exists.
- It is very important that a thorough inspection of the wiring and connectors be performed. Failure to carefully and fully inspect wiring and connectors may result in misdiagnosis, causing part replacement with reappearance of the malfunction.
- Inspect all of the circuitry that may cause the intermittent complaint for the following conditions:
- Broken wire inside the insulation
- Backed out terminals
- Improper mating
- Improperly formed terminals
- Damaged terminals
- Poor terminal to wiring connections
- Physical damage to the wiring harness
- If an intermittent malfunction exists refer to GENERAL ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURES .
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURAL TABLE
| Step | Action | Value(s) | Yes | No |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1. Reconnect all previously disconnected components 2. Connect a scan tool to the diagnostic link connector (DLC). 3. Turn the ignition switch from the OFF to ON position, engine off. Does the scan tool communicate with the electronic brake and traction control module (EBTCM)? |
-- | Go to Step 2 | Go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE |
| 2 | Using the scan tool in the ABS diagnostic trouble codes (DTC), read the VES DTCs. Does the scan tool display a current or history VES DTC(s)? |
-- | Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List/Type for the Applicable DTC Table | Go to Step 3 |
| 3 | Are there any current or history ABS/TCS DTC(s) displayed? | -- | Go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ABS | Go to Step 4 |
| 4 | 1. Start the engine. 2. Turn the steering wheel to the right. 3. Turn the steering wheel to the left. Does the steering wheel turn with little effort? |
-- | Go to Step 5 | Go to STEERING EFFORT HARD IN ONE OR BOTH DIRECTIONS |
| 5 | 1. Drive the vehicle. 2. While driving the vehicle perform several turns and listen for any unusual sounds. Was there any rattle and/or chuckle noise from the vehicle? |
-- | Go to RATTLE, CLUNK, OR SHUDDER NOISE FROM THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM | System OK |
