Instrument Cluster System Check

  1. Close all doors. Leave seat belt unbuckled. Ensure gear selector is in Park. Ensure parking brake is off. Turn ignition on. Ensure DIC, ANTI-LOCK, TRACTION OFF, AIR BAG, FASTEN BELTS, VOLTS, coolant TEMP, OIL PRESS, BRAKE, and SECURITY indicator lights illuminate briefly as a bulb check, and then turn off. Ensure coolant temperature and fuel gauge pointers sweep through operating range as a gauge check. If indicator light or gauge does not operate as specified, go to appropriate inoperative test under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  2. Fasten driver's seat belt. FASTEN BELTS indicator should turn off. If FASTEN BELTS indicator remains illuminated, go to FASTEN BELTS INDICATOR ALWAYS ON  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  3. Observe BRAKE indicator. If BRAKE indicator remains illuminated, go to BRAKE INDICATOR ALWAYS ON  under SYMPTOM TESTS. Apply parking brake. BRAKE indicator should illuminate. If indicator does not illuminate, go to BRAKE INDICATOR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  4. Check left and right turn signal operation. If turn signals do not flash, go to LEFT TURN SIGNAL INDICATOR INOPERATIVE  or RIGHT TURN SIGNAL INDICATOR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS. If turn signals remain illuminated, go to LEFT TURN SIGNAL INDICATOR ALWAYS ON  or RIGHT TURN SIGNAL INDICATOR ALWAYS ON  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  5. Turn headlights on. Check instrument cluster illumination. Observe LIGHTS ON indicator. If instrument cluster illumination does not turn on and dim when dimmer switch is turned, or LIGHTS ON indicator does not illuminate, diagnose and repair lighting. See appropriate wiring diagram in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article.
  6. Turn high beam headlights on. If high beam indicator does not illuminate, go to HIGH BEAM INDICATOR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS. Turn high beam headlights off. If high beam indicator remains illuminated, go to HIGH BEAM INDICATOR ALWAYS ON  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  7. Attempt to start engine. If engine does not start, diagnose and repair no start condition. See appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article.
  8. Press EM button on IPC. If HVAC and instrument panel cluster units do not switch between English and metric units, go to DIC SWITCH INOPERATIVE - ENGLISH & METRIC  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  9. Ensure trip odometer is displayed. Press and hold TRIP button for 3 seconds. If trip odometer does not reset, go to DIC SWITCH INOPERATIVE - RESET  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  10. Check fuel gauge operation. If fuel gauge does not indicate proper level, go to FUEL GAUGE INACCURATE OR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  11. Check engine coolant temperature gauge operation. If engine coolant temperature gauge does not indicate proper temperature, diagnose class 2 serial data communication problem. See appropriate wiring diagram in DATA LINK CONNECTORS article.
  12. Check tachometer operation. If tachometer does not indicate proper engine speed, go to TACHOMETER INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  13. Observe CHECK engine indicator. If CHECK engine indicator remains illuminated, go to CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR ALWAYS ON OR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  14. Observe OIL PRESS indicator. If OIL PRESS indicator remains illuminated, go to OIL PRESSURE INDICATOR ALWAYS ON  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  15. Observe VOLTS indicator. If VOLTS indicator remains illuminated, go to VOLTS INDICATOR ALWAYS ON  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  16. Observe AIR BAG indicator. If AIR BAG indicator remains illuminated, go to AIR BAG INDICATOR ALWAYS ON OR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  17. Observe ANTI-LOCK indicator. If ANTI-LOCK indicator remains illuminated, go to ANTI-LOCK INDICATOR ALWAYS ON OR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  18. Observe TRACTION OFF indicator. If TRACTION OFF indicator remains illuminated, go to TRACTION OFF INDICATOR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS. Turn traction control on. Observe TRACTION ACTIVE indicator. If traction active indicator does not illuminate, go to TRACTION ACTIVE INDICATOR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  19. Observe coolant TEMP indicator. If coolant TEMP indicator remains illuminated, go to TEMP INDICATOR ALWAYS ON  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  20. Observe SECURITY indicator. If SECURITY indicator remains illuminated, go to SECURITY INDICATOR ALWAYS ON OR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  21. Move gear selector through all gears. Observe PRNDL indicator. If PRNDL indicator does not indicate proper gear selection, go to PRNDL INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
