DTC B1477: Rap Relay Circuit (Short To Ground Or Open): Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Buick Regal and 1999 Buick Century. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If BCM diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step. If BCM diagnostic system check was not performed, go to BCM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. If vehicle is a Century Custom model, go to next step. If vehicle is not a Century Custom model, go to step  4 .
  3. Century Custom model is not equipped with RAP feature. Permanently disable DTC B1477 by reprogramming BCM. See NEW BCM SETUP  under PROGRAMMING. Go to step  18 .
  4. Check INADV POWER BUS fuse (15-amp), located in instrument panel fuse block. If fuse is blown, go to next step. If fuse is okay, go to step  6 .
  5. Replace INADV POWER BUS fuse. Check INADV POWER BUS fuse. If fuse is blown, go to step  11 . If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  6. Disconnect RAP relay. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  . Connect a test light between RAP relay harness connector terminal C2 (Orange wire) and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If test light comes on, go to next step. If test light does not come on, go to step  12 .
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect BCM Pink 32-pin connector C1. Using DVOM, check resistance between BCM harness connector C1 terminal C5 (Black wire) and ground. See Figure . If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, go to step  13 .
  8. Using DVOM, check resistance between BCM harness connector C1 terminal C5 (Black wire) and RAP relay harness connector terminal A1 (Black wire). If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 2 ohms, go to step  14 .
  9. Reconnect RAP relay. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between BCM harness connector C1 terminal C5 (Black wire) and ground. Operate radio and power windows. If radio and power windows operate, go to next step. If radio and power windows do not operate, go to step  15 .
  10. Reconnect BCM connector C1. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off. Wait 10 seconds. Turn ignition switch to RUN, then LOCK position. Open a vehicle door. Using scan tool, check for codes. If DTC B1477 is set, go to step  16 . If DTC B1477 is not set, go to step  17 .
  11. Repair short to ground in Orange wire between RAP relay and instrument panel fuse block. Go to step  18 .
  12. Repair poor connection or open in Orange wire between RAP relay and instrument panel fuse block. Go to step  18 .
  13. Repair short to ground in Black wire between RAP relay and BCM connector C1. Go to step  18 .
  14. Repair poor connection or open in Black wire between RAP relay and BCM connector C1. Go to step  18 .
  15. Replace RAP relay. Go to step  18 .
  16. Check for poor terminal connection at BCM connector C1 terminal C5. If terminal connection is okay, replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Reprogram BCM. See NEW BCM SETUP  under PROGRAMMING. Go to step  18 .
  17. System is operating properly at this time. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  . After any repairs are made, go to next step.
  18. Turn ignition off. Reinstall all components and connectors. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Check for DTCs. If any DTCs are current, perform BCM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS. If no DTCs are current, system is operating properly.
