Fuel Gauge Test
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Pontiac Bonneville. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Install scan tool. Turn ignition on. Check for any IPC Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's). If any DTC's exist, go to TESTS W/CODES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. If no DTC's are present, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect fuel gauge sender connector. Connect 2 Red leads of Gauge Tester (J 33431) to fuel gauge sender connector terminals "B" (Purple wire) and "D" (Black wire). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Set resistance dials on tester to zero ohms (Empty), then to 90 ohms (Full). If fuel gauge fluctuates from empty to full, go to next step. If fuel gauge does not fluctuate from empty to full, go to step 4).
- Connect a scan tool and establish communications with Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Set tester resistance to zero ohms then to 90 ohms, while viewing scan tool fuel sender data. If PCM recognizes changes in fuel sender data, see TESTS W/CODES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. If PCM does not recognize changes in fuel sender data, check Purple wire for short or open, repair as necessary. If Purple wire and ground circuit are okay, replace fuel sender.
- Disconnect IPC connector. Using a DVOM, connector terminals A14 and A8 on UB3-IPC. On connector C2 terminals A2 and B8 on U50/U2F-IPC's. While adjusting tester resistance values, check voltage between specified IPC connector terminals. If voltage reading varies with resistance changes from zero-90 ohms, check connector terminals for poor terminal contact. If voltage reading does not vary, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector C2. Using a DVOM measure resistance to ground from harness connector terminal A14 on UB3 IPC or connector C2 terminal A2 on U50/U2F IPC. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, locate and repair short in Purple/White wire. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Using a DVOM, measure resistance between PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 5 and IPC harness connector terminal A14 on UB3 IPC or C2 connector terminal A2 on U50/U2F IPC. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, see TESTS W/CODES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, locate and repair open in Purple/White wire.
