Fuel Gauge Test
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Oldsmobile Aurora and 1997 Buick Riviera. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition on. Use Tech 1 scan tester and read any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If Tech 1 displays FUEL SENDER PROBLEM (DTC 92), go to next step. If Tech 1 does not display FUEL SENDER PROBLEM (DTC 92), go to step 4).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect modular fuel sender connector. Connect jumper wire between modular fuel sender harness connector terminals "A" (Purple wire) and ground. Turn ignition on. If fuel gauge reads empty, go to next step. If fuel gauge does not read empty, turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster connector. Check Purple wire for an open circuit or short to ground. Check instrument cluster connector C1, terminal E4 (Riviera) or connector C2, terminal C2 (Aurora) for good terminal contact. If all circuits are okay, replace instrument cluster.
- Turn ignition off. Check Black/White and Black wiring for an open circuit or high resistance. Check modular fuel sender connector for good terminal contact at terminals "A" (Purple wire) and "D" (Black wire). Check modular fuel sender wiring for damage. If all wiring is okay, replace fuel level sensor.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect modular fuel sender connector. Connect 2 Red wires from Gauge Tester (J-33431) to terminals "A" (Purple wire) and "D" (Black wire). Set tester resistance dials to zero ohms (empty), then to 90 ohms (full). Cycle ignition switch from OFF to RUN position after each resistance value. If fuel gauge displays "E" at zero ohms and "F" at 90 ohms, go to step 6). If fuel gauge does not display "E" at zero ohms and "F" at 90 ohms, go to next step.
- Check Purple, Black, or Black/White wiring for a short to ground, open circuit, or high resistance. Check instrument cluster connector C1, terminals F16, E4, and E7 (Riviera), or C1, terminals B10 and C2 (Aurora), for good terminal contact. If all circuits are okay, replace instrument cluster.
- On Riviera, if LOW FUEL LED indicator does not light when fuel gauge displays "E", replace instrument cluster. If LOW FUEL LED indicator does light when fuel gauge displays "E", on Aurora vehicles, go to next step.
- Check modular fuel sender connector for good terminal contact at terminals "A" (Purple wire) and "D" (Black wire). Also check modular fuel sender wiring for damage. If all circuits are okay, replace fuel level sensor.
