Tachometer Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1994 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Electronic Ignition (EI) module connector located on top front of engine, on right end of valve cover. Connect Gauge Tester Harness Connector (J-33431-10) between Gauge Tester (J-33431) and EI module connector terminal "E" (White wire).
  2. Set tester frequency signal switch to 60 Hz and 54 MPH. Turn power switch to ON position and ignition switch to RUN position. Observe tachometer. If tachometer indicates 1350 RPM, check for clean, tight connections on EI module. If connections are okay, replace EI module.
  3. If tachometer does not operate as specified, check for open or short to ground in White wire. Also check for poor connections at instrument cluster and splice connections. If White wire and connections are okay, proceed to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GROUND  .
