PUSHROD Inspection: Notes

WARNING: The brake light switch can be knocked out of adjustment if excessive force is applied, even if the pedal and grommet are properly installed.
  1. To inspect the pushrod assembly, first check for proper pedal retention by attempting to apply a upward force (DO NOT apply excessive force). The pedal should resist any upward motion when a light upward force is applied. If the pedal can be pulled upward, the grommet is not properly seated. See Figure
  2. Stroke the brake pedal through its entire range of travel several times, using normal pressure against the pedal. The pedal should not feel "lumpy" or "mushy" and when released the pedal should return to the same position every time.
NOTE: The pushrod cannot slip out of position far enough to prevent brake application. The pushrod will always act on the booster piston, even if the grommet is removed. However a improperly installed or damaged grommet will affect braking performance. Lubricants should never be applied to the grommet.
