TRANS. REPAIR EQUIPMENT - & WORK AREA RECOMMENDATIONS

Model(s): All Oldsmobile (Section No. 7A)

Bulletin No.: Oldsmobile 38-11

Date: 07/10/1988

SERVICE INFORMATION

Repairing transmissions right the first time doesn't just happen. Along with proper training and a thorough knowledge of the operation of each unit, a technician also needs the proper place and equipment to perform his job well.

The following recommendations for equipment and work area to perform transmission repain will help improve efficiency and reduce comebacks.

WORK AREA

A separate transmission unit repair area, or enough stall space in width and length is needed to allow placement of benches, cleaning tank, special tool cabinet, tool chest and trash baffel. At least two work benches are required for enough surface area to disassemble, clean and inspect parts. This permits disassembly on one bench and transfer of cleaned parts to the clean surface of a second bench. A cleaning tank should be located between or beside the work surfaces. The tank should be used only for transmission parts. Cleaning other parts such as engine components can result in contaminates like carbon particles. There should be a compressed air supply with water and oil filtering system and access to a water supply (hot water if possible).

To save time and avoid repeat trips to the Parts Department, it is preferable to use the Hydra-Matic "QUICK-REQ" parts requisition forms when determining parts needed. These forms are available from GMSPO. There is a specific "QUICK-REQ- form for each model transmission or transaxle.

SELECTIVE PARTS

An assortment of selective thrust washers, band apply pins, clutch backing plates, apply rings, etc., should be available at the work station for immediate selection during reassembly.

SPECIAL TOOLS

It is suggested the transmission Special Tools be kept at the work station in a locking cabinet and under the technician's responsibility. The tool set should be complete including a dial indicator, off pressure gage and vacuum gage. (Kent-Moore is a recommended tool source for Special Tools.)

COOLER FLUSH

A trangnission cooler flushing tool is necessary for adequate removal of sediment and debris from the cooler system. The cooler should be flushed anytime a transmission or transaxle is removed from the vehicle for service.

It is essential to flush the oil cooler during major overhaul, SRTA installation, if fluid contamination is suspected, or in any case of pump or torque converter replacement.

The recommended cooler flushing tool is Kent-Moore Cooler Flusher Tool, J 35944. The correct flushing solution for use with this tool is the Biodegradable Flushing Solution available from GMSPO by the gallon, J 35944-20, or six-gallon case, J 35944-CSE. Refer to Dealer Technical Bulletin 87-T-01 for the proper use of the flushing tool and flushing solution.

MANAGEMENT

When an efficient work area is designed and used, improved quality, greater technician efficiency, less vehicle downtime, and fewer comebacks are the result.

It is service management's responsibility to assure:

  1. Old parts go into the trash barrel, not under the bench.
  2. Work area is kept clean.
  3. Special Tools and selective parts are accounted for and properly stored at the work area.

EQUIPMENT SUMMARY

  • Two work benches with transmission holding fixture.
  • Cleaning tank for transmission parts only.
  • Filtered compressed air and hot water supplies.
  • Cooler flusher with proper flushing solution.
