Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

The ECT is a thermistor which changes resistance with changes in coolant temperature. Low coolant temperature produces a high resistance while high temperature produces a low resistance.

The ECM supplies a 5 volt signal to the coolant sensor and measures the return signal voltage. Voltage is high when engine is cold, and low when engine is hot. The ECM uses this information to govern idle and fuel delivery.
