An applied vehicle needs to have the 5-speed A/T assembly replaced for any reason.
ACTIONS:
- Confirm this bulletin applies:
- Use CONSULT-II to check the vehicle's Current TCM Part Number.
- Compare the vehicle's Current TCM Part Number to Chart A
(see Fig 2
).
If the vehicle's TCM part number does not match one of the part numbers listed in Chart A ( Fig 2 ), this bulletin does not apply. Go back to ASIST for further diagnostic and repair information.
- Check to see if ECM reprogramming is needed for the vehicle you're working on (refer to Chart A , Fig 2 ).
- If needed, perform reprogramming by "SPECIAL ID LOOKUP" - a special process for this TSB only .
IMPORTANT:
The purpose of "ACTIONS" (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire SERVICE PROCEDURE
as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Confirm This Bulletin Applies
- With CONSULT-II "ON", print the Transmission Control Module
(TCM) Part Number (P/N) as follows:
[START (Nissan)] >> [TRANSMISSION] >> [ECU PART NUMBER] >> [COPY]
- Fig 1 is an example of the P/N printout.
- This is the TCM P/N.
- Attach this printout to the Repair Order.
- Below, you'll use the TCM P/N to see if this bulletin applies.
- Check the TCM P/N on the printout from step 1
(Fig 1
):
- Compare your vehicle's TCM P/N to those shown under Current TCM Part Number in Chart A below: (Fig 2 )
IMPORTANT:
To get the correct reprogramming data for this incident, you must:
- If your vehicle's TCM P/N matches a Current TCM P/N
in the chart above (see Fig 2
):
- This bulletin applies.
- TCM reprogramming will be needed.
- ECM reprogramming may be needed (refer to Chart A , Fig 2 above).
- Continue Perform Reprogramming by Special ID Lookup below.
- If your vehicle's TCM P/N does not match
a P/N in the chart above (Fig 2
):
- This bulletin does not apply. Go back to ASIST for further diagnostic and repair information.
Perform Reprogramming by Special ID Lookup
ECM & TCM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURES
Vehicle Reprogramming Overview for This Incident.
- There are six basic steps.
- Step 1: Download reprogramming data (transfer it) from ASIST into CONSULT-II.
- Step 2: Preparation for reprogramming.
- Step 3: Reprogram the ECM (if needed , as decided in Chart A , Fig 2 ).
- Step 4: ECM reprogramming "Wrap-up" (only if ECM reprogramming is done).
- Step 5: Reprogram the TCM.
- Step 6: TCM reprogramming "Wrap-up".
- If you are familiar with special TCM and ECM reprogramming using I.D. Code entry:
- Review Steps one through six - starting below.
- Use them as a "Quick Reference" for ECM and TCM reprogramming.
- If you are not familiar with special ECM
Reprogramming, refer to the "SPECIAL ECM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE FOR ECM I.D. ENTRY" general procedure.
- Or refer to it in the print copy of this bulletin.
- If you are not
familiar with special TCM
Reprogramming, refer to the "SPECIAL TCM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE FOR I.D. ENTRY" general procedure.
- Or refer to it in the print copy of this bulletin.
Step One: Download (Transfer) Data From ASIST Into CONSULT-II
- Click on the Keypad button (see Fig 3
).
- A Keypad will pop up, left side of screen.
- Using the digit keys on the keypad, enter the correct ASIST ECU DATA ID CODE.
- Go back to Chart A (see Fig 2 ).
- Then click the "Continue" button on the keypad.
- One ECM and one TCM data file will appear in the center of the ASIST screen.
- Now you'll add reprogramming data to the "File(s) selected" list. This list is on the right side of the ASIST screen (Fig 3
, above).
- Click on the "To" number for the TCM data (it's in the center of the ASIST screen).
- Then click on the "Add" button.
If ECM reprogramming is needed (see Chart A , Fig 2 .
- Click on the "To" number for the ECM data (it's in the center of the ASIST screen).
- Then click on the "Add" button again.
- Write the "To" number(s) on the Repair Order. You will need this later in the reprogramming process.
- Click the "CONTINUE" button to start the CONSULT-II setup.
Step Two: Preparation for Reprogramming
- Connect a battery charger to the vehicle's battery.
- Set the charger to a low charge rate (trickle charge).
CAUTION: For number 2 and number 3 below, DO NOT connect the CONSULT-II AC power supply. - Press [SUB MODE
] (see Fig 5
) then:
- From the listed items, find and select [Battery charge ].
- Check the CONSULT-II's "Charger Input" reading (see Fig 6
).NOTE:
- "Battery Voltage" is the voltage level of CONSULT-II's battery.
- "Charger Input" is the voltage level of the vehicle's battery. (It must be above 12 volts.)
CAUTION: If the "Charger Input" is below 12 volts:- A list of items to check when "Charger Input" voltage is below 12V is contained in the "Special ECM Reprogramming Procedure For ECM ID Entry" general procedure.
- Or refer to it in the print copy of this bulletin.
Step Three: Reprogram the ECM (if needed)
- You should have determined if ECM reprogramming is needed by looking at Chart A (Fig 2 ).
- If you are not familiar with special ECM Reprogramming, refer to the "SPECIAL EMS REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE FOR ECM I.D. ENTRY".
- Or refer to it in the print copy of this bulletin.
- If ECM reprogramming is not needed, go to Step FIVE: REPROGRAM THE TCM .
Step Four: ECM Reprogramming "Wrap-up" (only if ECM reprogramming is done)
- Turn the ignition switch "OFF" and CONSULT-II "OFF".
- Wait more than 10 seconds, then;
- Turn the ignition switch "ON" for 2 second, then
- Turn the ignition switch "OFF" again for 10 seconds (see Fig 7
).
- This will reset ECM "self learned" Data.
- Start the engine and check the idle speed.
- If idle speed is too low, perform "Idle Air Volume Learning" (IAVL). See the appropriate Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for this procedure.NOTE: If the engine will not idle, hold the engine RPM at about 2000, then slowly bring it down to an idle. IAVL can now be performed.
- If idle speed is too low, perform "Idle Air Volume Learning" (IAVL). See the appropriate Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for this procedure.
- Confirm the engine is operating normally.
- Make sure the MIL is OFF.
- If it's still ON, use CONSULT-II with the Diagnostic (red/white) Card to erase any DTC's that may have stored during the reprogramming procedure.
Step Five: Reprogram the TCM
- You're ready to do TCM reprogramming when you have completed steps One and Two.
- If you are not familiar with special TCM Reprogramming, refer to "SPECIAL TCM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE FOR I.D. ENTRY.".
- Or you can refer to it in the print copy of this bulletin.
Step Six: TCM Reprogramming "Wrap-up"
- Turn the ignition and CONSULT-II OFF.
- Disconnect CONSULT-II from the vehicle.
- Start the Engine and make sure the MIL is OFF.
- If it is ON, use CONSULT-II with the Diagnostic (red/white) Card to erase any DTC's that may have stored during the reprogramming procedure.
- Test-drive the vehicle and make sure the transmission operates correctly in all modes.
- See the AT section of the appropriate ESM for shift schedule specifications.
