Assembly (1)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Infiniti G35. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. As shown below, use a drift [commercial service tool phi 22 mm (0.87 in)] to drive manual shaft oil seals into the transmission case until it is flush.
    CAUTION:
    • Apply ATF to manual shaft oil seals.
    • Do not reuse manual shaft oil seals.

  2. Install detent spring and spacer in transmission case.

  3. Assemble manual shaft, manual plate, and parking rod after installing manual shaft to transmission case.

  4. Install retaining pin into the manual plate and manual shaft.
    1. Fit pinhole of the manual plate to pinhole of the manual shaft with a pin punch.
    2. Use a hammer to tap the retaining pin into the manual plate.
      CAUTION:
      • Drive retaining pin to 2+/-0.5 mm over the manual plate.
      • Do not reuse retaining pin.
  5. Install retaining pin into the transmission case and manual shaft.
    1. Fit pinhole of the transmission case to pinhole of the manual shaft with a pin punch.
    2. Use a hammer to tap the retaining pin into the transmission case.
      CAUTION:
      • Drive retaining pin to 5+/-1 mm over the transmission case.
      • Do not reuse retaining pin.

  6. CAUTION: Apply petroleum jelly to O-ring.

  7. Install terminal cord assembly in transmission case.
  8. Install terminal cord assembly connectors in bracket.

  9. CAUTION: Do not reuse O-rings.
    Apply petroleum jelly to O-rings.
  10. Install O-rings in servo assembly.
  11. Install return spring in servo assembly.
  12. Install servo assembly in transmission case.

  13. Using snap ring pliers, install snap ring in transmission case.

  14. CAUTION:
    • Do not reuse lip seal and D-ring.
    • Apply petroleum jelly to lip seal.
    • Apply ATF to D-ring.

  15. Install lip seal and D-ring in reverse brake piston.
  16. Install reverse brake piston in transmission case.

  17. CAUTION: Apply petroleum jelly to needle bearing.

  18. Install needle bearing in transmission case.
  19. CAUTION:
    • Do not reuse seal rings.
    • Apply petroleum jelly to seal rings.

  20. Install seal rings in drum support.
  21. CAUTION: Securely assemble them using a flat-bladed screwdriver so that snap ring tension is slightly weak.

  22. After installing the return spring and spring retainer in transmission case, use a clutch spring compressor to install snap ring in transmission case.
  23. Install reverse brake retaining plate, drive plates, driven plates and dish plate in transmission case.

  24. Assemble N-spring.

  25. Install snap ring in transmission case.

  26. Measure clearance between retaining plate and snap ring. If not within specified clearance, select proper retaining plate.
    1. Specified clearance "A": Standard: 0.7 - 1.1mm (0.028 - 0.043 in) 
    2. Retaining plate: Refer to " REVERSE BRAKE  ".

  28. Install needle bearing in transmission case.
  29. Install revolution sensor in transmission case.

  30. CAUTION:
    • Apply ATF to rear oil seal.
    • Do not reuse rear oil seal.

  31. As shown below, use a drift to drive rear oil seal into the extension until it is flush.
  32. Install return spring in parking pawl.

  33. Install parking pawl and pawl shaft in rear extension.

  34. Install parking actuator support in rear extension.
  35. CAUTION: Apply petroleum jelly to needle bearing.

  36. Install needle bearing in rear extension.
  37. Install seal rings in output shaft.
    CAUTION:
    • Do not reuse seal rings.
    • Apply petroleum jelly to seal rings.
  38. Install parking gear in output shaft.

  39. CAUTION: Be careful not to mistake front for rear because both sides looks similar. (Thinner end is front side.)

  40. Install output shaft in transmission case.
  41. Install bearing race in output shaft.

  42. CAUTION: Complete remove all moisture, oil and old sealant, etc. From the transmission case and rear extension mounting surfaces.

  43. Apply recommended sealant (Genuine Anaerobic Liquid Gasket or equivalent to rear extension assembly as shown in illustration.
  44. Install rear extension assembly in transmission case.

  45. CAUTION: Do not reuse self-sealing bolt.

  46. Tighten rear extension assembly mounting bolts to specified torque. (Because terminal bracket is tightened together with output shaft & companion flange, it should be installed before procedure 33.)
    1. Rear extension assembly mounting bolt: 52 N.m (5.3 kg-m, 38 ft-lb) 
    2. Self-sealing bolt: 61 N.m (6.2 kg-m, 45 ft-lb) 
  47. CAUTION: Make sure that drum support edge surface and direct clutch inner boss edge surface come to almost same place.
  48. Install direct clutch assembly in reverse brake.
  49. CAUTION: Apply petroleum jelly to needle bearing.

  50. Install needle bearing in drum support.
  51. CAUTION: Be sure to replace high and low reverse clutch and mid sun gear as a set.

  52. Install high and low reverse clutch assembly in direct clutch assembly.
  53. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, range the drive plates.

  54. Install high and low reverse clutch hub, mid sun gear assembly and rear sun gear assembly as a unit.

    CAUTION: Check that portion A of high and low reverse clutch drum protrudes approximately 2 mm (0.08 in) beyond portion B of rear sun gear.

  55. CAUTION: Apply petroleum jelly to needle bearing.
  56. Install needle bearing in rear carrier assembly.
  57. CAUTION: Apply petroleum jelly to bearing race.

  58. Install bearing race in rear carrier assembly.
  59. Install rear carrier assembly in direct clutch drum.

  66. CAUTION:

  67. Install seal rings in input clutch assembly.
  68. CAUTION: Do not reuse band servo anchor end pin.

  69. Install band servo anchor end pin and lock nut in transmission case.
  70. CAUTION: Assemble it so that identification to avoid incorrect installation faces servo side.

  71. Install brake band in transmission case.
  72. CAUTION: Apply ATF to front sun gear bushing and one-way clutch end bearing.

  73. Install front sun gear in transmission case.
  74. CAUTION: Apply petroleum jelly to needle bearing.

  75. Install needle bearing in front sun gear.
  76. Adjust brake band tilting using clips so that brake band contacts front sun gear drum evenly.

  77. Adjust brake band.
    1. Loosen lock nut.
    2. Tighten band servo anchor end pin to specified torque.
      1. 5.0 N.m (0.51 kg-m, 44 in-lb) 
    3. Back of band servo anchor end pin three turns.
    4. While band servo anchor end pin, tighten lock nut to specified torque.
      1. 46 N.m (4.7 kg-m, 34 in-lb)
