  1. Turn ignition off, then on. System is now in USER mode. If light comes on for about 7 seconds and goes off, system is okay (no fault codes are stored in memory).
  2. If AIR BAG warning light does not come on, go to AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON  under WARNING LIGHT DIAGNOSTICS.
  3. If AIR BAG warning light comes on and stays on, air bag system components have deployed or part of diagnosis sensor unit is defective. Go to AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT STAYS ON  under WARNING LIGHT DIAGNOSTICS.
  4. If AIR BAG warning light comes on for about 7 seconds and flashes on and off, fault codes are stored in memory. Go to next step.
NOTE: System will not enter DIAGNOSTIC mode if no malfunction is detected in USER mode. Intermittent and past codes cannot be retrieved using AIR BAG warning light.
  5. To enter DIAGNOSIS mode and retrieve fault codes, turn ignition switch on. After AIR BAG warning light has been on for 7 seconds, turn ignition switch off within one second of AIR BAG warning light going off. Wait at least 3 seconds. Repeat procedure 2 more times. System is now in DIAGNOSIS mode.
  6. In DIAGNOSIS mode:
    • If AIR BAG warning light comes on for 7 seconds and then goes off, no malfunction is detected.
    • If AIR BAG warning light comes on for 7 seconds and then begins to flash slowly and continuously (0.5 second ON, 0.5 second OFF), a malfunction has occurred, but is no longer present (intermittent fault). CONSULT tester must be used to retrieve codes. Go to CURRENT CODES USING CONSULT TESTER  .
    • If AIR BAG warning light comes on for 7 seconds and then begins to flash slowly and continuously (2.0 seconds OFF, 3.0 seconds ON), a malfunction has occurred. Use CONSULT tester to retrieve codes. Go to CURRENT CODES USING CONSULT TESTER  .
    • If AIR BAG warning light flashes a marker sequence (7 seconds ON, 2 seconds OFF, 3 seconds ON, 2 seconds OFF) and then flashes quickly, record quick flashes. Quick flashes represent fault codes. For example, 2 quick flashes indicate driver-side air bag module Fault Code 2. Go to FAULT CODES (DRIVER-SIDE OR PASSENGER-SIDE)  .
    • If light flashes a marker sequence (7 seconds ON, 2 seconds OFF, 1.5 seconds ON, 0.5 seconds OFF, 1.5 seconds ON, 2 seconds OFF) and then flashes quickly, record quick flashes. Quick flashes represent side air bag fault codes. For example, one quick flash indicates right side bag module. Go to FAULT CODES (SIDE)  .
  7. Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery cable. Repair system. After repairing air bag system, connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch on. After AIR BAG warning light has been on for 7 seconds, turn ignition switch off within one second of AIR BAG warning light going off. Repeat procedure 2 more times. System will return to USER mode.
